Building a cold frame

My hanging baskets with petunias or wave runners always seem to get leggy during the summer. I had been hearing about how people trim them back to keep them bushy and lasting longer. so i thought i would give it a try, I was so afraid of killing them.
I cut them back very hard and had piles of flowers and alot of mess on the porch floor.
The baskets seem to be doing well since i cut them and I was able to use the flowers i cut to make fresh arrangements around the house!!
Every year I battle the weeds in my gardens. Mulch has always worked pretty great, but can get costly. So this year, I decided to cover my garden with a layer of newspaper and then a layer of straw. It took an unbelievable amount of newspapers to cover all the gardens. Thanks to my library friends for giving me the old newspapers from the library. I am sooooo hoping this works...crossing my fingers!
