Preparing for the Bees

Such a defeated feeling when you see your colony of bees dying. Last Spring when we checked on our bees, I noticed the colony was diminishing and alot of dead honey bees in the bottom of the box. I knew there was no way to save them. So I let the hives sit last summer, knowing they would completely die out by winter. Getting honey from your honey bees is a great thing, but just keeping your colony alive and self sufficient is a success all of its own. Unfortunately, we failed at this and I am not 100% sure what was the cause of my strong hive that has been alive and producing honey for 5 years to die really was? In the fall we had a new child come to the house, which put us at raising a 1 yr. old, 2 yr. old, 3 yr. old and 4 yr old over the winter and I never winterized my boxes. I knew when I would go to clean them  for this year I wouldn't like what I was going to see. It was way worse than I could have imagined and never again will I let my boxes sit unattended for the winter. The wax moth resided in my boxes eating all of the inside of the hive and a tiny mouse resided in the bottom and ran between my feet to take cover in the trees nearby. ( I hate mice) We are getting ready to put a fresh coat of paint on our boxes and the my bees should be arriving in 2 weeks.

Finally!!! a decent picture!

It is so hard for anyone to take a decent picture of me. I am truly the worlds worst photogenic person! I have always been this way, even as a child. I started thinking that maybe it was my imagination, but then digital cameras came out!! Shortly after someone had taken my picture and looked down at their camera I noticed everyone would make the same confusing face. Their eyebrows would go together and the lips would start to scrunch together and then they would shake it off. Then I noticed that when my husband would take my picture and he would say, ummm no lets do that again! Then, after the 5th try, he would say, "uhhhh thats "pretty" good". On another occasion my sister was looking at some pictures of me and out of nowhere said, " Jill, you do not look as bad as your pictures". Nothing like the brutal honesty of your sister to set your thoughts in stone!! BUTTTTT,  Lo and Behold, my husband took a picture of me and my son, then looking down at the camera, he got a big smile on his face and said, "Its a good one!!" and gosh darn if he didnt pull it off!! A decent picture!! So I posted this one picture on FB as my profile picture and I had 3 different people ask me when I was gonna blog the picture. I had been thinking the same thing, but its kinda hard to blog a picture of two people doing nothing without looking totally conceited!! So here it is a blog post dedicated totally to showing my ONE good picture and of course my extremely handsome son.

Woolwrights Spring Hook-In 2012

My sister and I headed to Woolwrights Spring Hook-In last Saturday. There was a large turnout and lots of our friends were there.
There were vendors selling lots of wool, patterns, baskets, notions etc....

Linda from Grant Street Woolworks in Chambersburg was also a vendor.

I took pictures of my personal favorite rugs I saw there. It was a pretty great day with lots of shopping and relaxation.

Ramblings

Little I had his first sewing lesson. We took a piece of muslin and traced a picture of a bear and colored it with fabric markers. Next, we cut the bear out and put right sides together.  Then I taught Isaac a running stitch. He stitched around his bear leaving a small hole to stuff the bear. We turned the bear inside out and stuffed his bear with wool pieces. Then we stitched the hole shut. He is so proud of his little stuffie!

Ramblings

Nothing says spring like baby chicks!! We bought these baby Cornish Rocks this weekend. YES KATHY, we are eating these baby chicks!!  When they are all grown up of course!! I have to say when these meat chicks get big they are actually very ugly chickens. i call them "Jurassic park" chickens. So I think it will be easy to get rid of them.

The kids love them but they know we are striving to be more self sufficient, so i told them in 12 weeks we will be eating chicken.

This is our neighbor girl she spends alot of time at our house. you would think she is my child from the way she acts and looks. She has been part of our lives since she was 6 yrs old. She is now 13, time flies....

Tey has been enjoying his swing since warmer weather has hit us, I couldn't pass up blogging this picture. He loves the chicks too, but I cant get a picture of him with the chicks and watch he doesn't squeeze them to death at the same time.

The Big #2

Tey turns 2 this weekend. Tey has been living with us for only 5 months and has warmed his way into our hearts. This sweet baby does not have a nasty bone is his body. He loves Elmo so we went with a elmo birthday. He was so super excited about all of the attention. We still cannot get his b day hat off his head!

Being two is such a big responsibility, but I think Teys big personality will carry him through. Happy Birthday Tey Tey, may Jesus wrap his arms around your sweet little spirit and carry you through to the big 3!!
